Granville Island, Vancouver, B.C. in Canada is known for bohemian street performances in all seasons, drawing buskers around the world. But on Oct. 9, 2007, I bumped into a musician who doesn't fall in any category of buskers you have come to know. He is David Juritz, the concertmaster of London Mozart Players. Instead of in a concert hall, the violinist was busking in the public market's food court with his fiddle box open on the floor!
Mr. Juritz told me that Granville Island was a stop in his 60,000-mile journey he began in June from London, "with a backpack and an empty wallet," to busk in cities around the world playing exclusively Bach. He aims to raise money and awareness for his charity, Musequality, which funds music projects for orphans and disadvantaged children in developing countries.
CTV of Vancouver B.C. aired Mr. Juritz's visit to the Island that evening. (I was interviewed by the TV station about my experience of meeting Mr. Juritz but the footage was not aired. Yep, in the broadcast I uploaded here, you can see me in a blue cap and a black leather jacket taking pictures of Mr. Juritz and reading the names of the cities that Mr. Juritz toured.)
